What does a physics degree do for you? How much can you earn with a physics degree? Why are physicists found in such a wide range of industries?

Institute of Physics (IOP) president Dame Jocelyn Bell-Burnell is launching the IOP report on Physics Graduates from Scottish Universities at the National Museum of Scotland today, 5 November 2009.

The survey, run by the IOP in Scotland, which looked at nearly 900 physics graduates from Scottish Universities, revealed some fascinating results about physicists’ salary and career fields, shedding light on how much they earn and how their work impacts on Scottish heritage and economy.

Alison McLure, IOP National Officer in Scotland, said, “In Scotland, physics enjoys a particularly strong heritage and, at present, physics-based jobs represent 4.3% of Scotland’s entire workforce, making a lot of money for the country. In 2007 alone physics-based industries contributed £8 billion to the country’s economy.

“The IOP survey shows that physics graduates from Scottish institutions enjoy a versatile, mobile career path, both in Scotland and overseas.”
