Could you be a physics role model?

10 January 2005

Do you have what it takes to be a physics role model?

Can you inspire young people and communicate positively with the media? Do you have an active, interesting life, both inside and outside work?

If so, you could become part of an exciting, national campaign to raise awareness of science and engineering amongst young people.

NOISE (New Outlooks In Science & Engineering) is a UK-wide campaign funded by the EPSRC (Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council). It aims to stimulate young people's interest in science, mathematics and engineering by making these subjects more relevant and accessible.

A key element of the campaign is the team of young Be Yourself! role models. These role models come from a range of research backgrounds and have a variety of interests outside work. They do everything from testing the armour of tanks and investigating the bounce of cricket pitches, to helping to design an aircraft that can fly six times the speed of sound. The team includes a snow-boarding quantum physicist from London, an ice-climbing sports engineer from Sheffield and a kick-boxing geo-chemist from Cambridge.

As NOISE role models, the Be Yourself! team get involved in activities that specifically target young people (chairing events, giving talks, explaining their science in informal workshops and running experiments) and generic media activity.

The campaign is about to enter its fifth year and we are looking for young, enthusiastic scientists, mathematicians and engineers to join the team.

If you are interested in being considered as a Be Yourself! role model, you can get more information and an application form by dropping an email to vicky.bennett@aeat.co.uk.

The closing date for applications is Friday 28 January 2005. Short-listed candidates will be invited for interview on Tuesday 8 or Wednesday 9 February 2005 at the EPSRC offices in Swindon. Successful candidates will receive a full briefing and media training on Thursday 24 February 2005 in Bristol.

If you would like more information on the campaign, and the existing team, visit the website at http://www.noisemakers.org.uk.
